Day One

The first day of school, and the 3:30 doldrums have already set in.  Its the worst time of day.  Everybody, mostly me, is grumpy.  Everybody, again, mostly me, is needy, hungry and tired.  In 16 years of being a mother of school age kids, I have not found a solution.   I do know that the 3:30 doldrums are not cured by after school snacks, after school chores, more organization, or a cleaner house.  This year, we may institute an hour of mindless television from 3:30-4:30, just to get us through.

So.  The first day.  A few snafu's.  Duncan forgot his schedule, and Olivia forgot her backpack. He printed a new one off at school and we went back home for the backpack.  Olivia's teacher is pregnant.  I'm  not happy about that.  The last thing that girl needs is any kind of disruption to her life. After school, I got yelled at by the principal for not using the crosswalk.  So I turned around, and gave her my most withering stare.  Nothing like getting our relationship off to a good start this year. Duncan got on the wrong bus after school.  He said he got to the last stop and he was the last kid left on the bus and didn't know where he was.  But he told the bus driver where he lived and the bus driver brought him home.  Thank you kind bus driver!
Olivia got school lunch for the first time today.  She had a cheese stick.  I paid $1.60 for a cheese stick.

A few good things too:  Will says he is going to love his French class.  And he has lunch with his friends. Olivia made a new friend named Elizabeth. Nobody had homework. And Audrey's teacher is funny.  We had smore's for an after school snack.  We roasted the marshmallows over the gas range.

Only 179 days to go.

First day pictures:

Audrey was thrilled to be getting her picture taken in front of the whole school

Here she is in her new desk!

maybe we will remember to take last day of school pictures in this same spot, to see how much everybody grows this year.

Mitch started classes at Weber  today too.  He left the house at seven, to catch the train and then the bus.  I told him he had to get his picture taken too, but he never came out.  I will track him down later.  Unlike the rest of the crew, he has a TON of homework to get to.
