The Birthday Party That Was

Tonight we had a combined birthday party for Mitch, who turned 20 today (yikes I feel OLD) and my mom, who turned....well, another year older.

We held the festivities in our backyard. At first I was annoyed by the fact that the grass wasn't mowed, the patio wasn't cleaned off, and the swimming pool wasn't put away. I wanted everything PERFECT. But then I decided to not care so much about what wasn't, and just care about everything that WAS. The weather was beautiful. Slightly overcast and cool, but not a drop of rain. Everybody who should have been there was there.

There was an after-dinner trampoline show put on by Audrey and Olivia. Grandma was nearly brought to tears by Audrey's gift to her. It was a polar bear. Probably the cutest, softest, cuddliest stuffed polar bear ever made. And it was Audrey's. But she knows her grandma loves polar bears, so she wrapped it up and gave it to her. Terribly sweet.

We had beef with broccoli over rice, egg rolls, mandarin orange salad, and a cake roll. May I just say that the salad was divine. It was a new recipe, and I wasn't sure it was going to be very good, but holy cow. It was most excellent.

I still owe Mitch a steak dinner. That was the original menu choice, as it was his birthday and all. But steak for a crowd gets rather pricey. And it makes me nervous. You can't really sit down and enjoy a dinner together when somebody is cooking steaks. Everyone is so particular about how they like their steak cooked, and you wind up jumping up and down every 2 minutes to check if so-and so's steak has reached medium rare yet. So I vetoed him.

And that was Mitch's birthday. I have a child who has left his teen years behind him. I have no response to that.
