Sheltered

Duncan, on the way home from school the other day, said, "Mom, a kid in my class said a bad word today."

"What was it?" I asked. Dumb question, I know.

"Well, it was the F-word," he said.

"Really? Wow." At this point I'm thinking I'm a little shocked, but probably shouldn't be.

"Yeah," says Duncan. "Should I spell it for you?'

"Ummm....sure," I say.

He leans over to me, wanting, I'm sure, to shelter the innocent ears of his younger siblings, and begins to spell:

"F-.....

L-.....

I-.....

P."

That's like the time that Gavin came home from school upset by the fact that he had gotten in trouble for saying a bad word.
Me: "what word did you say?"
Gavin: "I don't want to tell you cause you will get mad."
Me: " I promise not to get mad but we need to talk about why you should say certain words....just tell me what it was."
Gavin: (doing a whining sort of cry)" I said..............Hottie"
WHAT??? I couldn't believe he got in trouble for that. I told him that really wasn't a bad word but if it bothered the teacher to not say it again near her.
