Tonight at dinner, we were having that timeless discussion about the fact that, at our house, if you don't eat dinner, you don't get treats after dinner. With Olivia though, everything turns into an argument.
Olivia says, " I don't want to eat my dinner."
So I say, " You don't have to eat your dinner. But you won't get any treats if you don't eat any dinner."
"But I want treats!" she says.
"Girls who eat their dinner get treats."
"But I don't want to eat my dinner!"
This exchange goes for a few rounds before I see a light coming on in her little head:
" I know! Let's pretend I ate my dinner!"
She did pretend to eat. She pulled her green beans apart and picked out the seeds. She mushed her ravioli around on her plate, and sloshed a little milk on the table.
And then I pretended to give her a treat.
We'll have a nice big breakfast though.
