The Joys of Autism

I spent 30 minutes this evening scouring the neighborhood for Duncan. He had left home after school to go play with friends, but at 6:30, he was not at either of the friends homes he usually plays at. He wasn't at the park or in the backyard. I was just beginning to get really worried about him when I realized the TV was on in the basement. Mr. Silent (aka Duncan) had slunk into the house around 5:30 without saying a word to anyone or making a sound and went straight downstairs. This is one of the hazards of living with Duncan. He is so quiet, self-contained and self-amusing that we often don't know where he is. Our other kids don't have this problem. Will can't do anything without jumping around, knocking things off shelves, or causing one of his sisters to yell at him. Audrey is usually talking nonstop, and Livvi is usually bossing someone around at the top her lungs. Even when Mitch and Alisa are barricaded in their bedrooms, you can hear music or video games or Alisa gabbing on her phone. But Duncan can be perfectly happy for hours without making a peep. Just one of the many unique qualities that make up who he is. He is a boy of few words, unless you ask him about video games and then he can literally go on for hours. He has told me he loves me exactly once in over thirteen years. But that is enough, because he is such a guileless, gentle, generous person.
