Audrey came home from school last week very excited because it was election time for class representatives. A class representative gets to be on the school council, and they meet with the principal once a month to plan activities, vote on some school issues, and things like that. It is a prestigious position, and since fourth grade is the first year that classes get to have a representative, it was a pretty big deal. And not just any kid can run- you have to be recommended by your teacher, have your parents sign a permission slip, and have exemplary grades and behavior.
Audrey and several other kids in her class qualified to run. The election was held on Friday.
And she lost.
A kid named Ammon won.
Ammon won by a landslide. And why?
Well, Ammon's mother just HAPPENS to be the aide in the fourth grade. So my first thought was that she must have rigged the election. Maybe she was buying votes for him! Offering to sneak in extra credit points or longer recesses to kids who voted for her son....
But no. Nothing as sinister as that.
It turns out that of all the kids running, he was the only boy. So naturally all the boys in the class voted for him, while the girls split their votes among all the girls running, which gave Ammon a huge majority of the votes. Audrey didn't think that really seemed right. I thought it sounded like something I have heard before. I bet the teacher saw this one coming from a mile away.
Those Good Old Boys Clubs start early.
Audrey took her defeat stoically. She says she will run again next year. I think next year, the girls need a better strategy.
