The hazards and joys of camping

When I got the call from Duncan at 3:45 on Friday afternoon, I was oblivious to the fact that I was supposed to be in Logan at 5:00 that evening to meet with his young men leaders and go camping at a hot springs campground overnight. Duncan spoke as if I already knew about the camping trip and that I'd agreed to go with him, but I could recall no such arrangement. I knew I couldn't get to the church by 5:00, and I also knew there was a pile of work I had yet to do. Then, I got an idea. I asked Duncan if the bishop was going too, and when he said yes, I was more than relieved, because I have the bishop's cell phone number programmed into my cell pone, and I could get coherent directions to the campsite (Duncan's not too astute with such mundane details). I called the bishop, got directions and made arrangements to have Duncan bring an extra sleeping bag with him. I also arranged a nice warm place to sleep inside the bishop's camping trailer instead of in a tent. I finished my work (sort of), and headed up I-15 in hopes of meeting with the boys near Preston, Idaho in time for dinner. When I got there, it was dark, and I had just missed swimming in the hot springs pool. It was also FREEZING cold. I ate a few tacos, shot the bull with the young men leaders until midnight, then went to bed inside the warm trailer, while the boys and other leaders braved the windy cold. Turns out the bed was too short, but I'd still take that discomfort over freezing my butt off. When we got up the next morning, I was worried Duncan was too cold or uncomfortable, but when I asked him if he was too cold, he smiled and said, "Nope, but there were a lot of cookie crumbs in my sleeping bag." Duncan's pretty cool in his own private way, and I'm glad I put off a little work to be there.
